Rich I really like your ideas. I also agree that we not not need to compete with KCBS. We should be working with them to promote BBQ. _________________ Big George's BBQ

I think MABA is doing fine for such a young organization. I don't think we should be thinking about being in competition with KCBS which is THE major BBQ organization in the country and probably the world. We can survive right along side them and fill in any voids such as inexpensive classes & sponsoring back yard events etc. I do agree that the Expo will never get off the ground unless it is a Sat/Sun event. Families are all busy on Sat. with kids stuff, Sunday would better be the public day or both perhaps...plus lets get it into a population center & charge a nominal admission. Most of all lets do a charity thing to get our name out there!!!!!
How about returning vets, military families, sort of like the Kookers Care thing. God knows we all have some money to share & we are great scroungers & field expedient experts. Meat suppliers donate the meat, we Q it and serve/deliver and blast out the MABA logo & name.

I'm in Harrisburg (soon to be Mechanicsburg) and I'm on the Board. Andy from Hershey is active on here. There's also a lot of guys in Lancaster (which is probably farther from where you were thinking).
Back to topic -- thank you for all of the great ideas. We're working hard at improving the organization, and all of these ideas are valuable. It's great to see all of the energy and interest out there.

IMHO, making sure MABA has a definitive presence at every competition should be a priority. Lord knows there's enough people wandering past booths at events with enough interest that a fair amount of membership could be drummed up.
As opposed to relying entirely on the Board to man these booths, I, for one, would be happy to work the booth for a two-hour shift. And I'd be willing to guess there's enough other people willing to do the same.
Of course, it would mean a board member needs to take responsibility to haul all the booth setup, handouts, forms, credit card machines, etc., etc., to the event and provide some basic training, but it's still a lot smaller demand on their time.

I like your ideas. Another way of advertising is the idea of an Association Flag that everyone has been talking about. I would be glad to buy one and put it up at a Comp _________________ Big George's BBQ
