The only thing that concerns me about the new TOY formula, is that it seems that at MMA's urging, KCBS seems to be pandering to the elite of BBQ. Isn't the whole premise of KCBS to spread the word about BBQ and not create divisions amongst the competitors? It somehow seems to about the possibility of more sponsorship, thus more revenue for MMA. I may be way off base whith this, but it kind of seems that way to me. _________________ Ron

I have the answer!!! Let's start the North American BBQ Association (NABA). Open to any and all in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Whether you smoke pig, moose, chicken, rooster, dog, or bear - come one, come all!!!!!

I like the idea of divisions based on number of comps and a minimum # in the lower catagory so one person doesn't walk away with everything from just one little comp. I also like the idea of a sliding scale for determining the number of comps that count toward team of the year.
But, lets say you've maxed out the # of comps for div II and have done well enough for a good shoot at TOY. In div I you need to have 2 more Comps "count". Do you stop or roll the dice??
As for KCBS regional divisions I prefer regional association - like MABBQA or the Secret Kingdom of Springfield BBQ and Outdoor Cookery Crew. (So far just two members!)

I honestly don't know much about all the politics and basis there.. But, could it be that some of the BIG names in BBQ are worried about smaller teams taking some of their thunder?? Seems that all the big name folks I have met have been very friendly and doesn't seem likely. Perhaps, it's a knee-jerk reaction to the spread of BBQ and the abundance of new compeitions and teams. I need to learn about it, but as I said before, I have enough to worry about already!!!!! _________________ 3 Eyz BBQ

Tom - we could start the PBA (Pirate's BBQ Association) for those teams with pirate in their name or logo, or in my case, with those logos with eyepatches and simulated skull and crossbones. Argh.... _________________ 3 Eyz BBQ

Jason that sounds cool to me. And we can have competitions starting with Pyratecon in New Orleans & ending with Pirates in Paradise in Key West! Plus all the other pirate fests in between. _________________ www.bbq-pirates-va.com |

Just to further explain, I don't believe it is the competetors that are trying to push out the little guy, It is the sanctioning body. As with anything there is growing pains. But I believe we will soon see the money enter the sport and further reduce the even playing field for all to compete on. With more prize money being distributed to larger teams for showing up at events, Through corporate sponsership.
Just my feeling anyway. _________________ The only thing consistant in BBQ is, It's always the judges fault!

Yea, what he said. I don't think it's the top teams either, I think it's more MMA looking to bring in big name sponsors. From what I've read, a lot of their earnings will come from bringing in sponsors and increasing membership. This in itself is a good thing, but what happens if the sponsors are steered to the top teams that "represent bbq". I don't know if I'm explaining my meaning well or not. Just a thought. _________________ Ron
