Hi Everyone!
I am from PA and just purchased a new smoker. Do these gadgets have to be licensed in PA? If so how do you go about it when picking it up in Oklahoma? PA always seems to have the rules that baffle everyone from any other state, so I thought I might ask here in the Mid Atlantic region.
Oh yeah do you have to title a smoker in the Commonwealth?
Thanks for any help you can send my way

I don't think so. I don't live in Pa., but I bought my smoker in Pa. and Tom said it didn't need to be tagged or registered. Just like a log splitter or a small ditchwitch or a compressor you tow behind your vehicle. _________________ Jon

Thats kind of the situation that I have been finding. One says no the other says yes. I guess I am going to have to go up to the State Police barracks and have a chat with the Trooper on duty.
I would appreciate other responses as well

Asking State Cops about laws is not a good idea. They don't know alot on these type things. Our MC no helmet law was in effect for months and they still were pulling dudes over to write tickets.
I decided to get a tag for here and any other state that felt testy. Wow. What a bunch of crap you have to go through just for trying to do the right thing.
Do you have a VIN#? That's the first hurtle. Make one up.
Then they want pictures and some kind of inspection from a certified mechanic with a ton of forms. He has to submit the papers with pictures.
I gave up. I didn't even want to hear the rest.
If anyone has gotten dinged for this, give a shout. It would be good to know. _________________ Gasser

That's because you put a smoker on a trailer. Trailers need to be titled and tagged. _________________ Jon

I'm not sure about PA but in VA you dont have to have a smoker registered. With that being said, if you mount a smoker on a trailer and it can be used to carry other stuff then yes it has to be registed. If its just the smoker, then no. _________________ "Life, its what you do between meals."

| Trailers in PA need to be titled. Which can be a pain in PA if the trailer has never been titled before. I would see if the trailer can be titled in another state, then transfer the title to PA. That would probably save you a major headache. |

I'll have to check that out idea out. My restaurant is actually in Ohio. It might be easier to title it over there and then maybe transfer the title over.

o.k. here is a simple brake down. a smoker by its self is a piece of equipment and does NOT need to be titled in PA. If your smoker has additional cargo on it such as wood, charcoal or pop up tents it Does need titled as it is acting as a cargo trailer and not just a piece or equipment. It all comes down to what mood the cop behind you is in. _________________ death isnt a punishement , it is a release. |

The DMV told me different. They said if it has wheels and is towed on the road it needs to be titled, tagged, and inspected in VA. _________________ Spicewine Tandem - "The Beast"

I asked Melvin about this at the Expo and he agreed with the above. He said that Meadow Creek can now issue VINs and origination certificates so you can title their smokers if you desire. But technically it isn't required if you aren't carrying any cargo. So I was wrong in my previous post. |
