I have a question, when does the lable of a newbie go away? After your first contest, your 5th, your first call, first GC, second season, third,???? When are you no longer considered a new guy to the circuit? Not that there is anything wrong with being a newbie, I was just pondering and trying to waste a little more time before Salisbury.
The list for Salisbury is growing every day. I think its up to 66 and there are some teams I think will be there that have not yet been posted. _________________ george

George,
I wouldn't consider you a newbie anymore. I would say after 1 year of competitions (5 or so events), or after getting some good calls, it fades away in the hurry... You had a great 1st year, so I think it faded. It's funny, teams go from the new kids on the block nothing to "worry" about to legitimate contenders and teams that other people watch out for.
Although I considered us newbies until the end of the last year, still kind of do... There is always alot to learn and people that have been doing it alot longer that Dan and I have. _________________ 3 Eyz BBQ

Jason, Thanks for the kind words. I agree, also a good point, even though a team reaches any of the milestones I stated in my original post, at least as far as I see it, you are always experimenting and changing technics, trying to improve. In a sense, still learning. That is part of what I like about this hobby/obsession/lifestyle. (take your pick, any or all) Things change contest to contest, year to year, region to region. I do consider us as newbies and I kinda like it that way, as we still have much to learn. I want to stay under the radar, hopefully, someday someone might ask, "who ARE those guys?" _________________ george

You nailed it..... Everytime you do a contest for the 1st time or a different region you fee like a newbie. When we went to the GAB in Kansas City last year, I felt like I was a bit of an outsider coming to their turf and certainly a newbie. Granted everyone was super friendly and it was great, but still was a new experience. If we are fortunate enough to get to the Jack at some point, I'm sure we will feel the same. _________________ 3 Eyz BBQ

You missed the GAB invite cooks meeting. The who's who of the BBQ world, and ahh, me. Yea felt weird.
George - I have bad news. People know who you are and they are already looking out for ya. Watch for more alcohol coming your way! And the POTR spies will be around at Chesapeak, trust me...... _________________ Dan Hixon

I agree with Jason, i think after a year of at least 5 contests with a bunch of calls mixed in you aren't a newbie anymore. I think you guys are going to have another big year and look forward to meeting you in Salisbury.
Is it April yet? _________________ Steve

I think part of not being a newbie is being able to pack for a comp with out bringing a bunch of crap you don't use. I think we will always be newbies.

I didn't know he had spies! How do we recognize them? I think I will have to get some too. Anyone willing to let me "store" some video equipment in their site in Salisbury?

Maybe "spies" is a bad word. From what I've heard on another forum, shiggin may be a better name _________________ Dan Hixon

You can put that video equipment at my site. Of course I won't be responsible for whatever ends up on that tape |
