As a MABA member and participant at the Expo, I want to thank all of the exhibitors, volunteers and staff for making it another excellent Expo. I'm always amazed at how many members of the BBQ community are willing to offer their time, their labors and their funds to make sure events like this happen. If it weren't for the volunteers and sponsors, functions like this would not happen.
The common wisdom seems to be that interest in BBQ is growing because of shows on the Food Network and the like. That's just not correct. It's because of the dedication of the BBQ community that this element of American culture continues to grow and attract a wider audience.

I thought that the people who ran the Expo did a very nice job. I would have liked to have seen more vendors. The seminars that I went to were interesting, and the people doing them were good at getting a discussion going. I left early- after the last seminar Friday and had a needed productive day at home. I will have to say going to the Expo made me anxious to be able to get my new grill so I can start to smoke again. Today I am meeting someone to see about buying some Hickory, Apple, and Cherry. I do thing that the Expo will bring in more people if it were held on Sat. and Sun as people would not have to take off from work to go to it. _________________ Big George's BBQ

I think as more vendors show up it will catch on. I will have a Backwoods display there next year I just couldn't get it together for this year but I did go on Saturday. I got to look at the Guru's Talboy which I am going to get as a holding and bean cooking oven it should work out great. _________________ If Your Not Smokinit Your Not Cookin

As one of the Expo committee, let me ask, what vendors/types of vendors would you have liked to have seen? _________________ Spicewine Tandem - "The Beast"

I am not sure. As someone who is trying to get into competitions I would would have liked to have seen some venders with things that would have been useful to me. The venders that we had were great. I bought from the BBQ Guru and Meadowcreek. They were the only Venders that interested me- except of ourse Franks as I got an application for Berks. I think venders for the general public with grills, equipment, and information would be good. I would think the more venders the more people who would attend. Advertising what venders would be there would bring in customers. To be honest I do not know what is out there. I heard more venders were there last year. I only stayed there Friday. I think we need to do things that would attrack more people. I enjoyed what was there. _________________ Big George's BBQ

See, this is the kind of catch 22 that we had. Equipment and supplies for experienced BBQ types are to a certain extent limited. Do you really want 10 charcoal vendors there? Do you as an experienced BBQr's really have any interest in backyard casual BBQ equipment? From an organizer's perspective you want some diversity in your vendors so everyone isn't selling the same thing. From the vendor perspective you need to be able to justify your expenses and fees via sales leads and attendee volume. As a graphic arts business owner, I wouldn't want to pay to attend a show where there are 5 other banner guys, it's just not worth it to me. Everyone needs some benefit from their participation. Not to pick on you but you're answer to "What kind of vendors" was (paraphrased) "I don't know-something that will help me". That's a tough target to hit.
This is an evolving event, if you have suggestions or ideas, now is the time to voice them so that the 09 event will be what you want it to be. _________________ Spicewine Tandem - "The Beast"

I though about taking a booth, but I couldn't man it and work the show. _________________ Spicewine Tandem - "The Beast"

a couple of ideas for vendors might be , trailer sales, different cookers like spicewine and backwoods. Sausage making, bulk spices, canopy sales, etc. you guys all did a great job I dont think any one is downing the expo. I for one will probably go next year to see what is new.
one more thing, THANKS and GREAT JOB!!!! _________________ death isnt a punishement , it is a release. |

As a member of the general public and one of the backyard fanatics that you drew to your expo I was disappointed in the lack of vendor participation that was geared towards me. My impression from your promotion of the expo was that I would be able to interact with vendors that were geared towards me. I attended on Saturday along with some friends and after maybe a half hour of browsing we were done.
I would like to see more products, new grills, gadgets, etc. that I could use to enhance my backyard hobby. As a soon-to-be empty nest family, earlier in the week I had stumbled across a very cool tabletop grill from Charbroil. I printed out the info and thought that maybe I would see it or something similar at the expo and possibly purchase it.
If nothing else, you inspired us to have our own cookout. We left the expo earlier than we liked, hit up Central Market in downtown Lancaster, bought some chickens, sausage and hot dogs and enjoyed a few cold ones while we did our own grilling.
Hopefully you'll give the novices a reason to come back next year!
Cheers!

I was not trying to be critical. I was only stating what I thought would be an improvement for next year so more people would want to come. I like the ideas of Smokin Gnome and Mcberman _________________ Big George's BBQ
