To: ALL MABA MEMBERS
I'm interested in hearing all of the ideas floating out there as to where/what you would like MABA to be.
Just to stimulate conversation:
Should we do an annual Expo? Bi-Annual, every 5 years, or not at all?
Should we work more on membership drives?
Are more MABA sanctioned contests good/bad?
Newsletters - is email ok or do you still want paper copies?
Annual banquet with awards?
Are you happy with what you are getting for your dues?
ANYTHING else you can think of? Trust me, your ideas will not fall on deaf ears! _________________ Dan Hixon

I take that as a "no", you aren't happy then?
What would you like? That is the main point of the post. _________________ Dan Hixon

I would like to see more MABBQA sanctioned events. Infact, I'd like to see MABBQA events give KCBS a run for there money.
I think that email newsletters are fine, I get enough in the snail mail and no reason to kill any trees or support the US postal service.
Expo's are great. I just wish I could have attended the last one. _________________ "Life, its what you do between meals."

I think that MABBA should seek more membership. Would be in it's best intrest to grow itself.
I also believe that it would be nice to get MAbba on more sanctioning of events, Even if it were a dual sanctioned thing. Say at Salisbury, Ok so it's KCBS, Lets also make it a MAbba sanctioned event. Get the name ouot there, And Have an awards ceremony at the end of the year. Any event that was Mabba sanctioned then you get xxx amount of points. But only if you are a member in good standing. And nothing of any real value, Spray painted tolet seat gold for most DQ's or something along those lines. And a decent trophy for say highest ranking "Newbie" team. And of course free Beer to any team named Mutha Chicken or something like that.
Also although I do enjoy the paper newsletter I am usally done with it within a day or so. So E-mail would be cheaper and less expensive. And save us money.
Might also look at fiiling a niche in the Judging area, Say have a private area for judges to turn to. Kind of a closed forum or place they can go. Any Judge KCBS, MIM, MABBA, ETC. Try to get more noteriety. Or something along those lines. I dont know just thinking out loud. _________________ The only thing consistant in BBQ is, It's always the judges fault!

I have no problems with dues. It costs money to run an organization. I feel we are doing petty good for what we pay for. I would like to see more sanctioed events. A banquet would be nie- it is a good way to get people together to have a good time. I like a yearly Expo, but it only works if more is offered i.e. seminars, and vendors. Something needs to be offered to te public to invite them in, and it is a good way to attrack members. I think you would have a bigger gathering if done on Sat and Sun that way people do not have to use a vacation day from work. Personally I prefer a paper newsletter beause it is easier for me to read. However E Mail is cheaper and I understant that it could save the organization money. I think membership drizes work well at events, expos, and leaflets at BBQ supply stores. A way to inrease membership is to offer a $5 discount to members for event registration. If you do 5 comps your membership only costs $10. _________________ Big George's BBQ

I like the end of year dinner with awards. A local, 'team of the year', 'rookie of the year', overall, each catagory etc. I think that would be fun.
The expo is a good idea, Great way to promote the sport if marketed properly.( not being critical) Sat, Sun would be a good start, more folks could attend. Try to generate intrest.
Many thanks to those who started the organization and those that currently devote time and energy to keep it going and to help it grow.
Muchas grassyass!
This forum is a great example of some folks time, energy, dedication and committment to grow the MABBQA, they sure ain't doing it for the great pay and benifits! THANKS GUYS! _________________ george

I think these are all great ideas. A membership drive could include hosting booths at other "non-BBQ" events. There is a Beer and Food Fest at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen this weekend, and that would have been a great place to have a booth! I'm sure there are other such events in our area that we could tie into.
Overall, I think MABA needs to develop and adopt a Strategic Plan outlining goals for 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, at a minimum, then publish it on the website for all members to see. I'm sure Dan's request is probably part of that process. _________________ Keith

I would like see the MABA become the first place people turn for help, instruction and or advice for all things typically concidered BBQ. (i.e. BBQ and grilling - heck why not any and all outdoor cooking).
I'd like to see small local affordable classes for backyard guys and intro to competition bbq cooking through out the region, a more instructive/comprehensive web site - not a knock to Jason, you are doing a great job - I'm talking about an epicurious.com for outdoor cooking.
There isn't a BBQ Magazine - MABA could do one - if there is a market for a Rachel Ray mag then why not bbq. What about a product line - or an "approved by" line. Official MABA tongs, mitts etc.
An online or emailed newsletter would be ok - then we could move to colour.
I have yet to go to the expo but we should have one. It is tough to grow something like this. Attendees want bargans, lots of vendors and instruction (seminars). The venders wants lots of attendees and vendors. It's a catch 22. The bigger the show the more of each we will attract. The Expo is a great way to introduce the public to BBQ & to MABA - if we can get them to come.
Am I getting my monies worth from my dues? I havn't really thought about it. On the surface I'd say no. Anyone can join the forum - I like the news letter but I haven't gained anything from it. The welcome pack was nice. Don't think we'll be team of the year so nothing to gain there.
However, $35 isn't a ton of money and it costs money to run any orginisation.
I think the MABA can be anything we want it to be and give KCBS a run for it's money - if we really want to. The KCBS sponsors competitions and really that's all - If MABA sanctioned comps do we follow KCBS rules? If so whats the point? I can see sanctioning smaller contests that may not be ready for KCBS sanctioning yet but don't see the point to dual sanctioning.
I'd like to see MABA as more of the Johnny Appleseed of BBQ. Planting the seed and spreading the word through out the reagion to not just for competitors but also to vendors, restaurants and the backyard guy. It's today's backyard guy that is tomorrows competitor, BBQ Judge or contest organizor.
While on the subect of money how about a MABA cookbook as a fund raiser? Each member can contribute some recipies for inclusion. It'd be fun and I'd buy one.
Just my 2 cents or so,

I don't think I could add anymore than what has been said already, lots of great suggestions. My only caution would be to have sanity checks, or milestones (probably better term). If we can do A, B, or C the first year that's great. Then do D, E, F and so on the following years. This way growth is controlled somewhat, and each check (or milestone) is achievable.
The money is a non-factor, in my honest opinion. Its takes resources to run a forum, set up booths as judging classes, create cards to pass out at comps, etc. That $35 would have been spent somewhere else, why not use it to better promote our organization? I look at it as 1 less time the family goes out to eat (which is prob a good thing), or half a tank of gas for the beast.
I really like MABA and the membership. This forum is a great way to communicate, and develop friendships that only enhance the BBQ experience. We all have a stake in the success or failure of this organization, we should do the things to continue to make it successful. _________________ Chris

I agree that moving forward is a good idea. I feel that we should improve on what we already have first before we start new ventures is the best way. There is only so much that the people who run the organization can do, and what they do is done well. I think working on memberships and the Expo are good starts. A benefit of dually sanctioned events is a good idea as that gets the name of the organization out there. If towards the end of the season we are planning to do another Expo and have ideas on some things we are going to have fliers cpould be put out. Then more people would be aware of it. May also get people to do seminars from these events.. I would like to see the Expo closer to a larger metropolitan area. That would probably attract more people, but it would also probably cost more. I also like the idea of a banquet. Just my two cents- maybe just one. _________________ Big George's BBQ

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS - KEEP EM COMING
Keep in mind the board is only 8 people, so in order to keep the organization growing and achieving any milestones we will need all the help we can get. Look for more info to come soon.
In the mean time, keep thinking! _________________ Dan Hixon
