Well that's one version of it. But I do like your version Tom. Seems there are as many versions of the origin as there is variations of BBQ.
http://inventors.about.com/od/inventionsalphabet/a/barbecue.htm
"Barbecue was not invented in America and no one knows who invented the barbecue. The word 'Barbecue' might come from the Taino Indian word 'barbacoa' meaning meat-smoking apparatus. 'Barbecue' could have also originated from the French word "Barbe a queue" which means "whiskers-to-tail." No one is sure of the correct origins of the word"
http://bbq.about.com/od/barbecuehelp/a/aa110197.htm
"Before you start brawling, remember that Barbecue is a social event and though you might not agree with the process, the food is always good. So my goal in this series of features will be to examine Barbecue in all its forms from the perspective of each individual history"
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~CLASS/MA95/dove/history.htm
"the word "barbecue" comes from a nineteenth century advertisement for a combination whiskey bar, beer hall, pool establishment and purveyor of roast pig, known as the BAR-BEER-CUE-PIG " _________________ The only thing consistant in BBQ is, It's always the judges fault!

I like your version Tom, but the burning question is what kind of beer did Capt. Smith bring to the "Corner" of the teepee? _________________ Ron

It was a classic Virginia Ale named for the room it was stored in. They kept it in the Rock (spelled Roche then) Fort suite 10. Some monks visiting from Belgium took a case home and the rest is history.
