Hey guys,
Dan and I made the decision to go to Danville this past weekend to compete, as we had heard great things about it. The venue was fantastic and we had a great time. But, in our quest to hit local contests that come up, we may consider checking our Chesapeake next year. For those that were at Chesapeake, please let me know what you thought about it (goods, bads, etc.). You can send me a private message if you prefer to keep it private. THanks so much!
Tom/Christy - your comments don't count !!!!! I can deal with a whole lot of negatives if I get that shiny trophy and $$ with the GC!!! _________________ 3 Eyz BBQ

Jason,
It's a nice venue with lots of things going on to keep the public occupied. There were pota potties not far and never a line. (I was able to use the same one all week-end but that's probably to much info). The grounds were pretty flat and must drain well - no mud even with all the rain the week before. The organizers work hard to make everything work well and the goodie bag included a cooler - aout 24 qt. and 2 coupons for 16 lbs of ice.
They could have inforced quiet time better. The folks accross from us were up all night. Drinking beer and having loud conversations the whole time. The people across from Keith were even worse. I'm sure he'll fill you in. Plus it was very windy all night.
We had planned to stay the night but we would have had to move because of the fireworks. Kind of a hassle so we desided to head out after packing up. Trafic was a mess on the way out - All of the tidewater area was coming to see the fireworks!
Awards were on time and handled well.
Having said that - I don't think it's a good "fit" for you guys. Danville is more "you". On the way home - after a good nights sleep at the Days Inn - We realized that every time we compete at a competition and 3Eyz isn't there we walk away with GC. Coincidence? Maybe, but why tempt fate?

Tom is right.........they didn't enforce quiet time at all. The team across from me had a party until 2:30, and they were loud and obnoxious. Several teams called for them to be quiet, to no avail. The Chesapeake Jubilee rep (not KCBS) was asked to quiet them down, and he told me "I'll rile them up a bit, but when I leave, I'm sure they'll settle down" He seemed to be more interested in mooching beers off of the teams. Between them and the wind, I think I wound up with a good 20 minutes of sleep Friday night/Saturday morning. Thank goodness I won enough money to pay for gas and stop in Salisbury for the night so I could get some sleep.
Poetic justice - the offending team finished 27 out of 29.
I'm going to send an email to the contest organizer and cc Linda Mullane about the entire situation. Because of this, I probably won't go back next year. It's a shame because it's nice venue, and for the most part, they do a nice job. _________________ Keith

I'll reiterate Tom's comments about availability of porta-potties, power and water. The organizers also mentioned their intent to rework in-grade distribution of power and water this season to other areas of the park, making them even more accessible, and eliminating the need to have anyone relocate so quickly after awards are presented.
Considering this is Chesapeake's third year, and their first time meeting the 25 team minimum, and that they're already trying to make things better, my impression is that they have a vested interest in keeping as many folks happy as possible. Although I did not stay on site all night, I agree that the one team across from us was just plain disrespectful. My guess is that enough people let the organizers know there was a problem, this will be the last time it's allowed to happen. _________________ Dave

I thought the contest was pretty well run. My impression is the cooking section of this festival was added on, the jubilee was huge, and I think older than 3 years. The contest had to compete with the bands on the stage at the cooks meeting, and had to hurry the awards before the next band started, although a quick, on time awards is not a bad thing. A few glitchs getting water and power when we arrived, there were plenty of folks to make sure the issue was addressed. If you had to drive out of the festival grounds, traffic was an issue. The organizers continually stopped by and asked if there was anything we needed. During the night, the roof of my trailer was making so much noise due to the high winds, I couldnt hear the partying teams, sorry Tom & Christy! The drive for us from northern Harford County was about 5 1/2 hours, not too bad, about 280 miles. The organizers seem to be committed to improving the event, they are aware that teams have other choices for that weekend and are working hard to convince teams to pick their contest. (very nice courtesy gifts given to all the teams) I think I would go back, the only question I have is the drive, but I dont think the organizers can do much about that! _________________ george

Thanks everyone!! Good information.. The drive is pretty much not an issue, since it took us 7.5 hours to get down to Danville...but only 5.5 to get home (yeah no traffic!!). My gut feeling is that we may try Chesapeake next year, assuming we have to choose between Danville and Chesapeake. It was nice to finally get to Danville though.

No need to be so formal . I feel responsible for you guys dropping out because of a conversation I had with John in Chesapeake. (Before we decided to do it.) Now if there aren't 25 teams it's my fault - but don't quote me on that!

One isn't your fault. I was hearing the same stuff in danville from others and we both happen to have the same opinion on the issue. I'll keep mine to myself _________________ Dan Hixon
