As some of you may know, I, along with a few others on the competition circuit, assist Linda Mullane as her R & D committee which she chairs for KCBS.
If KCBS was to start up a “Competitor Series” that would not compete with the established KCBS events, but run in parallel, what would you like to see?
- Grilling Competitions?
- LP Que type events that allows gas burners to competewith wood and charcoal fired cookers?
- Iron man, or stick burner only competition?
- other type of event????
And, what would you want for rules for each of these types of events? _________________ MABA Board member

My son would love to see Iron Man in events. I think it would be interesting also. Grilling steaks would be good. Would have to specify what type of steak everyone had to use i.e. rib eye _________________ Big George's BBQ

Any and all type of events, With the exception of the LP. unless it was abackyard thing.I would think most don't bring gas burners to comps. _________________ The only thing consistant in BBQ is, It's always the judges fault!

Hey, how about forcing people to cook fast. Like getting handed a pork butt and having turn in time in 6hrs or something. That would be challenging and interesting I think. _________________ Dan Hixon

Hey Mark,
Having done about as many MIM events as I have KCBS I must admit that I enjoy KCBS a little bit more as its a alot less work. Besides the difference in entries, whole hog, whole shoulder, and ribs for MIM the big difference between the two is the "on site judging". The on site judging adds a good bit of pagentry & excitement to the contest and really gives the spectators something to see & hear as opposed to watching the teams run their blind boxes up to a white tent where they disapear. I have looked up while being judged and seen as many as 20 people listening to every word intently, in short they feel like they are part of the action. The more spectators that KCBS draws the better, and also good for the organizers! Perhaps KCBS could consider having an "on site " in one catagory for any team that wants to take part and award a seperate 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place award for "On Site Presentation". The score could be a combination of the food entry, the site appearence and the presentation. This score would be stand alone and would not in anyway reflect on the regular KCBS results. This would prove to be great fun as on site judging gives you a real rush and lets you show your stuff.
Comments please!

Hey Rich,
By creating these other divisions, there may be a way to have MIM, or MBA as they're called now, events. I'm not sure how strong of a sanctioning body MBA is now that they have restructured, and it may be that MBA and KCBS may someday merge in some way, shape, or form.
I think there is enough of a loyal following for MIM type events so that that type of contest will not go away. _________________ MABA Board member

Hey Mark,
Thanks for your thoughts. The MIM is now only doing the actual "Memphis in May" comp on the the river in Memphis. MBA as you called it is actually the MBN or "Memphis BBQ Network" which has taken over all sanctioning for the MIM. I am a member of the MBN and they presently have about 400 judges signed up, I think all former MIM judges. Their web site is www.mbnbbq.com. There are many independent contests in the south that use both on site & blind and are well organized and alot of fun.
See Ya soon.....Galvinell's sounds good!!

Stick burner only... no temp controllers, no nothing else but true art of bbq stick burners..... manual draft controls, toss in the wood, stay up all night, etc.... _________________ AKA MrGrumpy
