Hello All,
Well the Pig Pen BBQ team, well augmented by Tom & Michele of Lo-n-Slo BBQ, who we deputized for the weekend, has returned from the great state of South Carolina. After many years of great weather at this event we hit it BAD....wind & rain & cold!!! It didn't stop us though, we worked like true MABA warriors and had a real good finish....5th place and a trophy in the "Low Country" division for shoulders and 2nd place trophy & $500 for ribs in KCBS, (thanks Tom & Michele). We just missed a call with a 6th place brisket.
This is a great event and a good season opener for all us "Yankees". We met the "Feeding Friendz" BBQ team from New Hampshire....they took 11th place overall in KCBS and we took 6th. Real nice folks.
Hope more of our MABA teams come down next year.
Rich & Connie

Wow, Great pics, Great places, looks like it was a rough one. Guess that new toy hauler really came in handy.
Question about the Hog though. What size was it? And I am guessing that there was no rule to have the head on. If so, Does that change the minimum weight? ( If there was one)
For insatance, Lets say the rule said you had to have a minimum hog,125. Then would you have to increase the wieght of the hog to say 150. To accomadate the "rule" after the head and legs were removed.Or would 125 be OK even with the head removed. And I am just guessing in the head weight, I really don't know what the head would way.
I have never competed in a whole hog comp before. And I am curious how it is run.
Again Congrats to all. _________________ The only thing consistant in BBQ is, It's always the judges fault!

Dear Mutha Chicken BBQ,
The Palmetto Pig Pickin has been around for a long time, they are not MIM or MBN people. They have there own judges and rules. For on site you get four judges at once for each of the three catagories, whole hog, shoulders, & ribs. You also hand in a blind box, no garnish, sauce seperate small container in the blind box. This is called the "Low Country" division and the hog & the shoulders are given to you as they are included in the entrance fee....you may bring your own ribs. These hogs were about 120 lbs with the head and lower legs off..the spine is cracked and they lay flat. I call em "road kill".
Each contest can be different.
